Biology

A guide for the Biology Program at Midland College
Green Tree

What Is Biology?

Biology is the study of living things from single-celled organisms to redwoods, blue whales and the human body. It examines both whole organisms and their parts including cellular structures, organs and living systems. Biology has a symbiotic relationship with chemistry and is an integral discipline for many specializations in health care, agriculture and environmental studies. Students of biology have many possible tracks including medical school, healthcare in general, wildlife management and scientific research.

Midland College provides students the opportunity to study the subject in a variety of specializations and transfer to a 4-year university through its Biology program.

Starting Your Biology Research

This guide is designed to help you start and develop your biology research. You should plan on devoting more time to it than you might expect, particularly if you don't have experience conducting formal research. Start the process as early as you can so that you will have enough time to develop your ideas, respond to setbacks and find enough materials for a strong result. The day you receive (and hopefully read!) your syllabus is a good time to start.

Begin by reviewing resources found in the Starting Your Research section of this guide. Doing so is particularly important if you don't know much about the topic. This page will provide access to introductory materials on the subject which in turn will point you to more specific and in-depth resources. This guide is further divided into format categories available through the LRC such as journals, books and videos. Your instructors may require you to use one or more of these.
